Better home and family for better life

Just about every homeowner would love to kit out their kitchen with custom cabinets and luxury countertops, if it weren’t for the off-putting price tags. When a major overhaul isn’t in the budget, a few tips and tricks may all that is needed to decorate a kitchen with style. With some careful planning and a bit of creativity, it’s possible to give kitchen a fresh, up-to-date look without breaking the bank.

Light It Up

Dark and dreary lighting can make any kitchen feel like it needs a complete makeover. Taking advantage of all available natural light is the first step towards brightening up a kitchen. Sleek and contemporary Roman blinds are a good choice for a kitchen window treatments. Roman blinds not only brighten a kitchen, they offer a streamlined design that makes kitchens look chic and contemporary. When a light colour is chosen as the base, Roman blinds have a quality of luminescence, even when the louvers are partially closed.

Many kitchens have an overhead lighting fixture that provides general light, but also casts shadows under cabinets. Task lighting installed under cabinets can make preparing meals more pleasant and convenient. Track lighting systems consisting of strips of miniature bulbs effective task lighting. They are both affordable and easy to install. Replacing the overhead pendant lighting with a more efficient design is another inexpensive option, and offers a good opportunity to add an element of style to the kitchen.

Cabinet Upgrades

Stock kitchen cabinets are one of least expensive options for replacing existing cabinets. Today’s off-the-rack cabinets offer better construction, and far more decorative options, than the particle board cabinets on the market only a few years ago. They are available in a broad array of colours, woods, mouldings and door styles. Even more affordable are ready-to-assemble cabinet kits. While design choices are limited with ready-to-assemble kits, they can be upgraded with quality paint and upscale cabinet pulls and drawer knobs.

The most affordable cabinet solution is to not replace them at all. Sometimes a fresh coat of paint and new hardware is all that it take to make cabinets look new again. Other options include removing, replacing or refurbishing only the cabinet doors.

The Overlooked Backsplash

Homeowners often overlook the opportunity to use the backsplash, the wall area above the countertop and below the cabinets, to make a strong design statement. As the surface is not generally subject to the stains and spills that can assail countertops, cabinets and flooring, the backsplash allows homeowners the chance to express some decorative flair. Mosaic tiles are a popular choice for the kitchen backsplash, as they are often sold on mesh sheeting that makes them easy for homeowners to install them.

By focusing on making a kitchen brighter through the use of effective lighting and Roman blinds, and by concentrating on upgrading surfaces, rather than replacing expensive kitchen components, homeowners can add style and functionality to their kitchens, and still have money left over to cook up a gourmet meal.
